Leopold Gottlieb was an artist unhampered by state or cultural borders, the confines of a style or the constrains of a community. He spent his entire life travelling in pursuit of artistic progress, showing his works almost all over the world: from Lviv, Kraków and Warsaw, to Vienna, Berlin and Paris, to Pittsburgh. He was friends with the Ecolé de Paris artists who would meet at the La Rotonde cafe – Europe’s artistic hub – and co-created the international bohemian community in Paris. Having sprung from Polish modernism and symbolism, his art evolved towards sublimated form, offering a synthesis of human existence, its distinguishing features including a melancholic aura that surrounded delicately sketched silhouettes, rhythmic composition and a subtle palette, restricted to pinks, light blues and browns.
